PCOS

PCOS stands for Polycystic Ovary Syndrome. PCOS is a hormonal disorder common among women of reproductive age. It is characterized by the presence of multiple cysts in the ovaries, causing the eggs not developing normally or not being released during ovulation.

What is PCOS ?

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a common hormonal disorder affecting women of reproductive age. It affects how the ovaries work and can lead to irregular periods, excess androgen levels, and polycystic ovaries. PCOS is one of the leading causes of infertility but can be effectively managed with proper treatment.

Reason for PCOS

PCOS involves an imbalance of androgens (male hormones) in the body, insulin resistance and low-grade inflammation.

Symptoms

Irregular menstrual periods or no periods

Excess hair growth on face, chest, and back

Weight gain, especially around the waist

Darkening of skin in certain areas

Heavy bleeding during periods

Acne and oily skin

Thinning hair or hair loss from the scalp

Difficulty getting pregnant

How do we diagnose PCOS ?

Diagnosis requires meeting at least two of three specific clinical criteria involving cycles, hormones, and imaging.

Review of irregular menstrual cycles

Testing for high levels of androgens

Ultrasound to check for cysts on the ovaries
