What is Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)?
PID is a condition in which female reproductive tract (uterus, tubes and ovaries) and their surrounding structures in the pelvis get infected
Reason for PID?
Most common cause for PID is an ascending infection from the vagina/ cervix. Most common bacteria are gonorrohea and chlymadia which cause sexually transmitted diseases. Rarely PID can also occur through blood borne infections.
Symptoms of PID?
Symptoms of PID include chronic pelvic pain, pain during menses, foul smelling vaginal discharge , fever and infertility. In some cases women can be asymptomatic
How do we diagnose PID?
We can diagnose PID by taking a detailed history and a thorough physical examination. Additional tests include blood tests, USG, CT, and laparoscopy.
Impact of PID?
If left untreated PID can cause infertility, chronic pelvic pain and can increase the risk of ectopic pregnancies.
