Intra Uterine Insemination (IUI)
IUI is a procedure in which best quality sperms are injected into the uterus. Main objective of IUI is to get the best quality sperms close to the egg.
Indications for IUI:
IUI is mainly indicated in few cases like
- Decrease in the sperm count/ motility (mild male factor)
- Early stages of endometriosis
- Donor sperm treatment for a woman (if husband is having no sperm count)
- Cervical factors ( some conditions in which a womens cevix does not accept husband sperms to pass through it)
Understanding IUI procedure:
In IUI follicular monitoring will be done for a woman mainly to know the ovulation day. On the day of ovulation husband will give a semen sample (self-cycle IUI). Semen sample will be washed and best quality sperms will be injected into the uterus on the same day. Woman will rest for 15 to 20 min and can go back home. The result of IUI will be known after 2 weeks after the IUI. IUI Result can be measured by a simple urine pregnancy test/ blood test (beta hcg) to confirm pregnancy.
IUI Success rate:
Success rate of IUI after using fertility medications varies between 15% to 25% depending on the underlying conditions.
Side effects or complications:
IUI is a relatively simple procedure and there are no major side effects for this procedure. Many patients ask whether the procedure is painful and it is not a painful procedure. Couples can go back to home after 10-15 mins post IUI treatment.
